About St Martin's
St Martin's is the northernmost of the five inhabited islands and, for many visitors, the highlight of the entire archipelago. It is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the British Isles — particularly Great Bay on the north coast, a vast, sheltered arc of white sand that regularly features in lists of England's best beaches.
The island has a gentle, unhurried atmosphere. There are no cars (other than the island's own working vehicles), no traffic noise, and a community of around 140 people who maintain a small vineyard, flower farms, and a handful of excellent local enterprises. It is the kind of place that visitors return to year after year.
Getting To St Martin's
There is no direct service to St Martin's from the mainland. All visitors travel first to St Mary's by Scillonian ferry, Skybus or helicopter, then take a tripper boat from St Mary's Quay. Tripper boat services run seasonally (approximately April to October) and must be checked in advance.
Things To Do on St Martin's
- Swim and sunbathe at Great Bay, Lawrence's Bay and Little Bay (check tide and local conditions; swim with care)
- Visit St Martin's Vineyard — the most southwesterly in the UK
- Walk the coastal path around the entire island (approximately 8 miles)
- Birdwatch — St Martin's is on key migratory routes
- Snorkel and kayak in the crystal-clear waters
- Eat at the Seven Stones Inn
- Watch for dolphins and seals from the headland
Accommodation on St Martin's
St Martin’s has limited accommodation, which helps it retain its exclusive, peaceful character. Options include a boutique hotel (Karma St Martin’s, the former St Martin’s on the Isle), St Martin’s Campsite (a 4-star, family-run site), and a handful of self-catering farm cottages and chalets. We list these neutrally rather than recommending one over another — for the fullest, most current list, see the official Visit Isles of Scilly St Martin’s listings. The Seven Stones Inn offers food and drink but does not provide accommodation.
