About Bryher

Bryher is the smallest of the five inhabited Isles of Scilly, with around 80 residents according to Visit Isles of Scilly. Its exposed western coast — particularly the aptly named Hell Bay — is one of the most dramatically beautiful places in Britain when Atlantic storms roll in.

The contrast between Bryher's two coasts is extraordinary. The eastern side, facing Tresco, is sheltered, sandy and tranquil. The western side faces the Atlantic with nothing between it and North America, creating a raw, elemental landscape that is completely unlike anywhere else in the islands.

Getting To Bryher

Bryher has no direct transport link from the mainland. Travel to St Mary's by Scillonian ferry, Skybus or helicopter, then take a tripper boat from St Mary's Quay to Bryher. You can also cross directly between Bryher and Tresco by boat.

Things To Do on Bryher

  • Walk the coastal path from Shipman Head Down to Hell Bay
  • Watch Atlantic waves crash into the rocks at Hell Bay in storm season
  • Visit south-facing Rushy Bay for views towards Samson (check conditions and local advice before swimming)
  • Walk up Samson Hill for views across Bryher and the surrounding islands
  • Birdwatch — Bryher is exceptional for migratory birds in autumn
  • Eat at the Hell Bay Hotel restaurant
  • Kayak and paddleboard in the sheltered eastern waters

Accommodation on Bryher

Bryher offers a compact but varied range of independent places to stay. Hell Bay Hotel is the island's hotel — a boutique property on the western coast with sea-facing rooms, a spa and a restaurant. Bryher Campsite offers tent and camping pitches for visitors who prefer to camp. There are also several locally run self-catering cottages and guest rooms around the island. We list these neutrally rather than recommending one over another — for the fullest, most current list of independent places to stay, see the official Visit Isles of Scilly Bryher listings.

Book early — Bryher's limited accommodation fills very quickly. The Hell Bay Hotel is particularly popular and often books out 6+ months ahead for peak summer dates.
