Scillonian Ferry — Isles of Scilly

Scillonian Ferry

Penzance to St Mary's — the classic sea crossing to the Isles of Scilly.

The Scillonian Ferry: Your Complete Guide

The Scillonian III has been sailing between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly for decades, and for many travellers it remains the definitive way to arrive on the islands. There is something genuinely memorable about pulling into St Mary's harbour by sea — salt air, the smell of the ocean, and the slow, satisfying pace of a crossing that feels nothing like a flight.

Ferry essentials before you book

  • Route and time: Penzance Harbour to St Mary’s, around 2 hours 45 minutes.
  • Timetable: seasonal sailings; use the official timetable for your exact dates and the service-status update before travelling.
  • Prices: advertised adult day trips from £35, subject to dates and availability. A day-trip fare is not the fare for an overnight stay; price your full itinerary with the operator.
  • Boarding: normally closes 30 minutes before departure. Double-sailing days can differ; follow your booking email.
  • Day-trip baggage: no hold luggage; one hand bag up to 5kg (40 × 55 × 20cm). Standard hold allowance is explained below.
  • Connections: allow time between train, parking, luggage drop-off and boarding. The ferry quay is separate from Penzance Heliport and Land’s End Airport.

The Route

The Scillonian sails from Penzance Harbour, departing from close to Penzance railway station. The route crosses the open waters of the Celtic Sea, passing St Michael's Mount shortly after departure before heading across open water to St Mary's. Arrival is at St Mary's Harbour, the main hub for the inhabited islands.

Journey Time

The crossing takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes in normal conditions. This is considerably longer than the helicopter or Skybus, but for many passengers the journey itself is part of the appeal. On a clear day, the views are spectacular and wildlife spotters regularly see dolphins, seabirds and occasionally basking sharks during the crossing.

Season

The Scillonian operates seasonally — typically from March to November each year. It does not run in winter. This is an important consideration if you are planning travel outside the summer season. For year-round options, see Skybus flights or the Penzance helicopter, with Land’s End the year-round Skybus departure airport.

2026 update: 2026 is expected to be the final season for Scillonian III. Scillonian IV is planned to replace her from March 2027. Always check the latest updates from the operator before booking.

Fares & Prices

The ferry is generally the most affordable way to reach the islands. Day trip fares can start from around £35 adult, though prices vary significantly by date, season and how early you book. Standard return fares are higher and also vary. Always confirm current pricing directly with the official operator at islesofscilly-travel.co.uk before booking.

Luggage Allowance

Standard tickets: 2 hold bags per person

Combined weight: 25kg maximum

Maximum dimensions per bag: 85cm × 60cm × 40cm

No single bag should exceed 20kg

Day-trip tickets exclude hold luggage. Hand luggage: one bag up to 5kg and 40 × 55 × 20cm.

This is the most generous luggage allowance of all three travel options to the Isles of Scilly, making the ferry particularly well suited to families and those staying for a longer visit.

Travelling With Dogs

Dogs welcome on board

Must be booked in advance

Maximum of 2 dogs per adult

Dogs permitted on the outer decks

The ferry lets you stay with your dog on the outer decks. If you are travelling to the Isles of Scilly with a dog, the ferry is typically the most straightforward choice. Always book your dog's place when you book your own ticket — space for pets is limited.

Weather & Disruption

The Scillonian crosses open sea and can be cancelled in rough weather, strong winds or poor visibility. If your sailing is cancelled, the operator will typically rebook you or offer a refund. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for any trip to the Isles of Scilly, particularly if you are on a fixed schedule. See our weather and disruption guide for more information.

Getting To Penzance

Penzance is well connected by rail. Great Western Railway operates direct services from London Paddington, with journey times depending on the service. Local services also connect from Plymouth, Truro and Exeter. The railway station is within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal.

Parking: long-stay car parks are within walking distance of the harbour, but they fill quickly on peak sailing days and we don't recommend one over another. See our Penzance parking guide for current options and charges, or arrive by train to avoid parking altogether.

Staying overnight in Penzance

Penzance accommodation — before or after Scilly

Many travellers stay a night in Penzance either side of their Scilly crossing — especially ferry passengers with early-morning sailings or late arrivals back on the mainland. This map shows overnight accommodation in and around Penzance. Availability and pricing are provided by the booking partner and change over time; always confirm details directly before booking.
