Scilly is not a destination where one headline price tells the whole story. Your total depends on how you travel, how long you stay, which island you choose, the time of year and how much island hopping you plan to do.
The safest way to budget is to split the trip into six parts: mainland travel and parking, the crossing or flight, accommodation, food, inter-island transport and activities. We use official operator information wherever a current published figure exists and avoid pretending that variable prices are fixed.
1. Start with the journey to Scilly
For a 2026 Scillonian III day trip, Isles of Scilly Travel currently publishes an adult return fare of £35, with child, infant and dog fares also listed on its official day-trip page. Skybus day trips from Land's End are advertised from £149 for adults. These are day-trip products, not representative of every overnight return fare, so always price your actual dates through the operator.
If you are staying overnight, compare the ferry, Skybus and Penzance Helicopters for your own dates rather than relying on an old blog price. Fares can vary by route, availability and ticket type. Scilly Compare's travel comparison pages are designed to make that decision easier without pretending one option is universally best.
2. Add mainland travel and parking
If you sail from Penzance, remember that South Pier itself has no public parking. Isles of Scilly Travel operates a park-and-ride for eligible longer-stay passengers, while public car parks in Penzance are useful for day trippers. The operator says its park-and-ride must be booked at least 48 hours ahead and is not suitable for Scillonian day trips.
Rail travellers can reach Penzance station, which the ferry operator lists as roughly a ten-minute walk from the quay. If you are driving from farther away, include fuel, overnight accommodation in west Cornwall if needed, and parking in the budget rather than treating the ferry fare as the whole transport cost.
3. Accommodation is usually the biggest variable
There is no honest single 'average Scilly hotel price' that stays accurate across the year. Accommodation ranges from campsites and self-catering to guesthouses, hotels and higher-end stays, with large seasonal differences. The most useful approach is to choose your preferred island first, then compare real availability for your dates.
St Mary's has the broadest range of services and is the main arrival point. Tresco has a more curated, privately run feel; St Martin's, Bryher and St Agnes offer smaller-scale stays and a quieter pace. Booking early is especially sensible for school holidays, festival periods and popular weeks because the islands have finite bed stock.
4. Build a realistic daily food allowance
Scilly has everything from self-catering supplies and beach picnics to cafés, pubs and destination dining. A couple staying self-catering and making breakfast and some lunches will spend very differently from visitors eating three meals out every day.
A good budget is therefore behavioural rather than fictional: decide how many breakfasts, lunches and dinners you expect to buy out, then check current menus for places you actually want to visit. The official tourism site specifically highlights seafood, local producers, vineyard visits, cafés, picnics and seasonal food events as part of the islands' food scene.
5. Don't forget island-hopping and activities
Inter-island boats are part of the Scilly experience, but they are an extra line in the budget. Boat services vary with weather, tides and seasonal timetables, so it is better to allow a flexible pot for island hopping than hard-code one price into your plan months ahead.
The same applies to activities. Some of Scilly's most memorable experiences — wildlife trips, watersports, guided walks, golf buggy hire, vineyard visits and wellbeing sessions — have limited capacity or operate on particular days. Decide which two or three experiences matter most and price those directly before you travel.
A sensible way to budget
Create three totals: a minimum budget, a comfortable budget and a splurge budget. Keep the travel and accommodation figures based on live quotes, then add realistic daily amounts for food, boats and activities. That gives you a far better answer than any article claiming a Scilly holiday costs exactly one magic number.
For a day trip, the calculation is much simpler because the official ferry and Skybus day-trip products give you a clear starting fare. For a longer holiday, use this guide as a checklist and then replace every variable with a live quote for your dates.
Sources and accuracy
We use official tourism bodies, transport operators and public heritage organisations for factual claims in this guide. Timetables, fares, opening times and weather-dependent services can change, so always confirm time-sensitive details directly before travelling.
Keep planning
