Quick Answer

If the Scillonian is cancelled, Isles of Scilly Travel will contact you and offer a rebooking, a Skybus transfer (subject to availability) or a refund. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all Isles of Scilly trips — particularly at the shoulder ends of the season.

Does the Scillonian Get Cancelled?

The Scillonian III crosses approximately 28 miles of open Atlantic sea between Penzance Harbour and St Mary's — one of the most exposed domestic ferry routes in the UK. Cancellations are not commonplace, but they do happen, and any Isles of Scilly traveller should understand what to do if their sailing is disrupted.

The crossing is most vulnerable to cancellation at the shoulder ends of the season — March, April, October and early November — when Atlantic weather systems are stronger and less predictable. During the summer peak, conditions are generally calmer, though no sailing can be guaranteed.

Over a typical season, the vast majority of scheduled sailings run as planned. A cancelled sailing is the exception, not the rule. But given how many visitors book accommodation, activities and onward travel alongside their ferry ticket, the consequences of a cancellation can be significant — which is why preparation matters.

When Are Cancellations Most Likely?

March — Early April

Higher risk

The start of the season can bring Atlantic fronts and choppy seas. Early sailings in March are the most likely to be disrupted.

May — August

Lower risk

Peak season conditions are generally settled. Cancellations are infrequent but can occur in any sustained Atlantic low pressure system.

September

Low–moderate risk

Often excellent conditions. Some increase in Atlantic weather towards the end of the month.

October — November

Higher risk

End-of-season sailings face increasing wind and swell. The season typically ends in November.

Full refund

How To Stay Informed

Check the official Isles of Scilly Travel website — islesofscilly-travel.co.uk — for service status updates.
Ensure your booking contact details (email and phone number) are current and correct.
Check the weather forecast the day before travel — particularly in spring and autumn.
Follow the operator on social media for real-time disruption announcements.

Travel Insurance — Strongly Recommended

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for any trip to the Isles of Scilly, particularly if you have pre-booked accommodation, activities or onward connections. When selecting a policy, look for:

Cover for transport disruption (cancelled or delayed services)
Accommodation cancellation protection if you cannot travel
Flexibility to rebook or receive a refund if weather disrupts your plans
Cover for activities booked in advance on the islands

Alternative Travel If The Ferry Is Cancelled

Both Skybus and the Penzance Helicopter operate year-round and are not subject to sea conditions. If the Scillonian is cancelled at short notice, availability on alternative services may be very limited — so it pays to have travel insurance and a flexible mindset.

Some travellers who regularly visit the Isles of Scilly book a Skybus flight alongside their Scillonian ticket as a deliberate backup. This gives flexibility — if the ferry is cancelled, they have an alternative already confirmed.
