Getting To The Isles of Scilly: Your Complete Guide
The Isles of Scilly are located approximately 28 miles off the tip of Cornwall — close enough to feel accessible, but remote enough to feel genuinely apart from the rest of the world. There is no bridge or causeway. To reach the islands, you must travel by sea or air, with three distinct options available to travellers.
Scillonian Ferry

Season: March–November

Skybus

Penzance Helicopter

Season: All year
Best for: Fastest, Tresco direct, special occasions
Choosing Between Ferry, Plane and Helicopter
The right option depends on where you are coming from, when you are travelling, how much luggage you have, whether you have a dog, and how much time you have on the day.
- If you are travelling with a family and want the experience of arriving by sea — choose the ferry.
- If you want to get there as quickly as possible or travel in winter — choose the helicopter or Skybus.
- If you are visiting Tresco and want to land directly — choose the helicopter.
- If you want flexibility across the year with multiple airport options — choose Skybus.
- If budget is a primary concern — the ferry typically offers the most affordable fares.
Getting To Your Departure Point
Penzance is the hub for both the ferry and helicopter. Penzance railway station is well connected with direct Great Western Railway services from London Paddington (approximately 5 hours), Exeter and Plymouth. The ferry terminal and heliport are both within easy reach of the station.
Land's End Airport is a small regional airport on the western tip of Cornwall, about 9 miles from Penzance. It is primarily accessed by car, though taxi and transfer services are available.
Newquay Airport and Exeter Airport have regular connections from London and other UK cities, making them convenient departure points for those coming from further afield.
Parking: each departure point has its own parking arrangements and charges, and availability can be limited — particularly at the heliport in peak season. We don't recommend one provider over another; check current charges and availability directly with the relevant airport, operator or Cornwall Council before travelling, or consider arriving by train to Penzance. See our ferry parking guide for Penzance-specific detail.
