The best month depends on what you want from Scilly. Summer gives you the broadest holiday atmosphere and warmest conditions; spring brings flowers and major events; autumn is strong for walking and birdlife; winter is the quietest and has more limited visitor services.

Rather than pretending one month wins for everyone, this guide uses the official seasonal picture to help you match your trip to your priorities.

January and February — maximum quiet

Winter is Scilly at its quietest. The official tourism site says some services may be limited, so this suits returning visitors, walkers and people looking for peace more than those wanting a full summer-style programme.

March — the islands begin to wake up

Spring starts early in Scilly compared with much of mainland Britain, with flowers and narcissi a defining part of the season. Ferry operations usually restart in March, but always check the current timetable for your year.

April — walking season

April is closely associated with Walk Scilly. For 2027 the festival is confirmed for 8–17 April. Spring temperatures are typically mild rather than hot, making this a strong month for walking and gardens.

May — gig racing and late spring

The World Pilot Gig Championships traditionally bring a major burst of activity around the May bank-holiday period. In 2027 the official calendar lists 30 April–2 May. Outside the event peak, May can offer a useful balance of spring scenery and increasing seasonal activity.

June — long days and outdoor time

Summer conditions become established, with the tourism body describing June to August as warm but rarely excessively hot. Longer daylight makes this a strong month for beaches, walking and watersports before the busiest school-holiday period.

July and August — peak summer

These are the busiest tourism months, with the fullest summer feel and strong demand for accommodation and activities. Book the things you care about early and expect less spontaneity for limited-capacity experiences.

September — late-summer feel and food

Visit Isles of Scilly says September often feels like an extension of summer. Taste of Scilly runs 11–20 September 2026, making the month especially attractive to visitors interested in local food and drink.

October — walking, birds and a quieter pace

Autumn brings fewer visitors, good walking conditions and strong birdwatching interest. Weather becomes more changeable as the season progresses, so flexibility matters.

November and December — winter mode

These months return to the quietest rhythm. Some seasonal visitor businesses close or reduce hours, and ferry availability is not the same as high season. For the right traveller, that calm is the attraction rather than a drawback.
