Getting To Tresco From The Mainland

Tresco is the second-largest of the five inhabited Isles of Scilly, and home to one of Britain's most celebrated gardens — the Abbey Garden — along with some of the finest beaches in the UK. Unlike St Mary's, Tresco does not have a public ferry connection from the mainland; only the Penzance Helicopter lands there directly.

If you travel by Scillonian ferry or Skybus, you arrive at St Mary's and then take a short inter-island boat journey to Tresco. There are three distinct routes to consider, depending on your priorities: speed and convenience, luggage, budget, or dogs.

Only one service flies direct to Tresco: the Penzance Helicopter. All other services — Scillonian ferry and Skybus — arrive at St Mary's, from where you take the inter-island boat to Tresco.

Your Route Options

Option 1: Penzance Helicopter → Tresco

Direct. Recommended for Tresco visits.

The Penzance Helicopter departs from Penzance Heliport and lands directly at Tresco Heliport in around 15–20 minutes. You step off the helicopter and you are on Tresco — no inter-island boat required, no St Mary's connection, no waiting around. This is the most seamless way to reach Tresco.

Option 2: Scillonian Ferry → St Mary's → Inter-Island Boat

Take the Scillonian III from Penzance to St Mary's (~2h 45m), then the inter-island boat from St Mary's Quay to Tresco (~20–30 minutes). This is the most luggage-friendly route — the 25kg allowance is ideal for longer Tresco stays with plenty of gear.

Option 3: Skybus → St Mary's → Inter-Island Boat

Skybus flies to St Mary's Airport in as little as 20 minutes from Land's End, then the inter-island boat takes you to Tresco. The Land's End leg is extremely quick, but note the 15kg luggage limit. Dogs are permitted from Land's End and Newquay routes (pre-booked).
