Planning a Day Trip to the Isles of Scilly

A day trip to the Isles of Scilly is one of the most rewarding day excursions available from mainland Cornwall. In a single day from West Cornwall, you can swim in clear turquoise water, walk dramatic coastal paths, eat exceptional seafood, and experience a small group of islands that feel genuinely unlike anywhere else in Britain.

The key to a successful day trip is choosing the right transport and checking departure and return times carefully. Different services give you different amounts of island time, and on peak summer days, the difference between a relaxed day and a rushed one can come down to how you travel.

This guide covers everything you need to know — transport comparison, typical timetables, what to do on the islands, and how to book.

Suggested Day Trip Itinerary — St Mary's

For most day trippers, St Mary's is the destination — it is the largest island, with the most to do and the best facilities. Here is a suggested itinerary for a day trip arriving via Skybus or helicopter (approximately 6–7 hours on the island):

Arrive

Land at St Mary's Airport or disembark at St Mary's Harbour, Hugh Town

Morning

Walk from Hugh Town along the coastal path towards Peninnis Head — dramatic rock formations and sea views (allow 1–1.5 hours)

Late Morning

Swim at Town Beach or Porthcressa Beach — both excellent, both within walking distance of Hugh Town

Midday

Lunch at one of the harbour-side restaurants or cafés in Hugh Town — fresh crab sandwiches and local seafood are a highlight

Afternoon

Browse the independent shops and galleries in Hugh Town. Visit the Isles of Scilly Museum (small entry fee).

If Time Allows

Take a tripper boat to Tresco, St Agnes or St Martin's (check timetables — this works best on a Skybus or helicopter day trip)

Depart

Return to the harbour or airport for your homeward journey

Day Trip Booking Tips

Book as early as possible — day trip spaces are limited on all services and sell out in peak season
Check exact departure AND return times on the specific date you plan to travel — they vary
For the Penzance Helicopter, book by phone for dog spaces — not available online
Travel light — 15kg on Skybus, 20kg (soft bags) on the helicopter, 25kg on the ferry
Check the weather the day before — conditions affect both comfort and cancellation risk
Have travel insurance — particularly the helicopter and ferry can be affected by weather disruption
On Skybus, the Land's End departure gives the most island time and the most spectacular low-level flight
