Welcome to the Isles of Scilly

The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of approximately 145 islands and rocks lying 28 miles southwest of Land's End, Cornwall. Five of them are inhabited: St Mary's, Tresco, St Martin's, Bryher and St Agnes. Together they are home to around 2,200 people, yet attract tens of thousands of visitors each year drawn by the extraordinary beaches, wildlife, mild climate and sense of extraordinary remoteness.

For first-time visitors, the islands can feel almost impossibly remote — and yet they are entirely accessible from the British mainland in as little as 20 minutes. This guide covers everything you need to know before you arrive.

Step 1 — Choose How To Get There

There are three ways to reach the Isles of Scilly from the mainland. Each has different strengths, and the right choice depends on your priorities.

Use our Travel Calculator or the full comparison page to choose.

Step 2 — Choose Which Island to Stay On

All mainland transport arrives at St Mary's (or Tresco, if flying by helicopter). For a first visit, most people recommend basing yourself on St Mary's — it has the widest range of accommodation, restaurants and facilities, and it is easy to take day trips to the off-islands from there.

Essential First-Timer Tips

  • Book transport and accommodation well in advance — summer dates can sell out 6+ months ahead.
  • Bring layers — the weather can change quickly, even in summer.
  • Pack light if flying — Skybus has a strict 15kg limit.
  • Cash is helpful — some smaller businesses on the islands are cash-only or have intermittent card connections.
  • There are no ATMs on the off-islands — withdraw cash on St Mary's.
  • Island hopping is one of the highlights — check tripper boat times on the day you arrive.
  • Mobile signal can be limited — download maps and accommodation details before you travel.
  • The islands are compact — most things are within easy walking distance on each island.
  • Travelling with lots of luggage? The ferry's 25kg allowance beats Skybus (15kg) and the helicopter (20kg, soft bags only).
  • Coming from London? Direct trains run to Penzance (around 5–6 hours from London Paddington), a short walk from the ferry terminal and heliport.
  • Older visitors: the ferry offers the most spacious seating and easiest boarding with mobility aids — contact the operator to arrange assistance in advance.
  • Pre-book evening meals in peak season — island restaurants and pubs get very busy and may not accommodate walk-ins.
  • Helicopter flights are loud — worth knowing if you are noise-sensitive or travelling with very young children.
