Yes, you can visit the Isles of Scilly for a day — but the trick is not trying to conquer the whole archipelago before tea. St Mary's is the natural focus for most first-time day trippers because both the ferry and Skybus arrive there and many highlights are reachable on foot.

The official tourism organisation actively promotes Scilly day trips, while Isles of Scilly Travel says a typical Scillonian III day trip gives around four hours ashore, with selected sailings offering longer visits. That means your best itinerary is simple, compact and flexible.

Choose your journey based on the kind of day you want

Scillonian III sails from Penzance and the crossing is currently described by the operator and tourism body as about 2 hours 45 minutes. The ferry journey itself is part of the experience, with coastal views and the possibility of marine wildlife sightings. The published 2026 adult day-trip fare is £35.

Skybus day trips from Land's End are much quicker in the air, with the operator advertising a roughly 20-minute flight and day-trip fares from £149 for adults. If time ashore matters more than the sea journey, flying can give you a longer island day. Always check the service status before setting out; Newquay Skybus services are currently suspended from 1 September 2026 until 16 March 2027, with Land's End being the key Skybus base during that period.

A realistic four-hour St Mary's plan

Start at Hugh Town and resist the urge to sprint for another island immediately. Walk from the quay through town towards Porthcressa, then choose either the Garrison for coastal views and history or a loop towards Old Town if your timings allow. Build lunch into the route rather than treating it as an interruption.

If the weather is good, leave time for a beach stop. If it turns, Hugh Town's shops, cafés and museum-style heritage options give you alternatives. The important thing is to remain close enough to the quay that you are not watching the clock from the opposite side of the island.

Could you island-hop on a day trip?

Sometimes, yes — but only when boat times and your return travel line up cleanly. Inter-island services are weather and tide dependent, so a first-time visitor with only a few hours is usually better experiencing St Mary's properly than turning the day into a transport challenge.

If you have one of the longer ferry day-trip dates or a flight schedule that gives you substantially more time, an off-island visit becomes more realistic. Check the local boat boards and Tourist Information Centre on the day rather than assuming a timetable months in advance will still apply.

What to book before you go

Book the mainland-to-Scilly transport first. If you are driving for the ferry, sort parking at the same time. For activities with limited capacity, such as guided trips or watersports, pre-booking may also be wise, especially in peak summer weeks.

Do not overbook the day. Scilly rewards leaving room to wander, sit on a beach and enjoy the fact that you are on an island rather than racing through a checklist.

Best day-trip rule: choose one memorable thing

Pick one anchor experience — a coastal walk, a long lunch, a beach, a guided tour or simply the ferry voyage — and let everything else fit around it. That gives you a much better chance of enjoying Scilly rather than merely proving you were there.
