Scilly is easy to love, but it works differently from a typical mainland break. Transport is weather-sensitive, island hopping is part of daily life and the small scale means a little preparation goes a long way.

These are the practical things worth knowing before your first visit. Where circumstances change seasonally, we tell you to check rather than presenting a temporary timetable as permanent fact.

Travel and arrival

Find your departure point →

  • The main sea route is Penzance to St Mary's on Scillonian III during its operating season.
  • Skybus flies to St Mary's; as of September 2026, Newquay services are suspended until 16 March 2027, so check the live service-status page.
  • Penzance Helicopters also serves Scilly from Penzance.
  • Your car does not travel on Scillonian III; plan mainland parking separately.
  • Allow extra time for check-in and transfers rather than building a tight mainland connection.

Weather changes plans

Work through the travel checklist →

  • Scilly has a mild maritime climate, but Atlantic weather can still be changeable.
  • Boat services and some activities depend on weather and tides.
  • Pack layers and waterproofs even when the forecast looks friendly.
  • Keep one or two parts of your itinerary flexible so a weather change does not wreck the whole week.

Getting around is part of the experience

  • Walking is one of the easiest ways to explore the inhabited islands.
  • Bike hire is available on St Mary's and Tresco.
  • St Mary's also has buses, taxis and other local transport options.
  • Inter-island boats connect the islands, but timings can vary with conditions.
  • Check local boat boards and the Tourist Information Centre for current-day information.

Book the things that would really disappoint you to miss

  • Accommodation and mainland travel should come first.
  • Popular small-group experiences can fill up in busy periods.
  • Some activities operate on limited schedules or specific days.
  • Restaurant booking expectations vary, so check the individual venue rather than assuming.
  • Leave some free time — Scilly is not improved by scheduling every 20 minutes.

Island life rewards sensible expectations

  • St Mary's has the broadest range of services; the off-islands are smaller and quieter.
  • Opening days and seasonal services can differ from mainland expectations.
  • A four-night trip does not require visiting every island.
  • The coastline, beaches and walking are a major part of the experience, so bring footwear you actually want to walk in.
  • Respect wildlife, private property and protected areas; the islands' natural environment is part of what makes them special.

Sources and accuracy

We use official tourism bodies, transport operators and public heritage organisations for factual claims in this guide. Timetables, fares, opening times and weather-dependent services can change, so always confirm time-sensitive details directly before travelling.
