Southernmost Island

About St Agnes

St Agnes is the most southerly of the five inhabited Isles of Scilly, and arguably the most remote-feeling of them all. With a population of fewer than 80 people, it has a deeply peaceful, end-of-the-world atmosphere that makes it a favourite with returning visitors.

The island is connected to the tiny uninhabited island of Gugh by a sandbar — The Bar — which can be crossed on foot at low tide. It is home to the Turk's Head, widely believed to be the southernmost pub in the United Kingdom, and to Covean Cottage Restaurant, which enjoys a strong reputation among visitors.

Getting To St Agnes

There is no direct transport to St Agnes from the mainland. Travel to St Mary's first, then take a tripper boat from St Mary's Quay. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Tripper boats operate seasonally (April to October) — always check the latest timetables before travelling.

Things To Do on St Agnes

  • Walk to Gugh island across The Bar at low tide (check tide times — it floods at high tide)
  • Visit the Turk's Head — the southernmost pub in the UK
  • Walk the coastal path around the entire island
  • Birdwatch — St Agnes is world-class for migratory rarities in autumn
  • See Troytown Maze, one of the oldest stone labyrinths in Britain
  • Eat at Covean Cottage Restaurant
  • Swim at Porth Conger and Periglis Cove (check tide and local conditions; swim with care)
  • Visit Troytown Farm for cream teas and camping

Accommodation on St Agnes

Accommodation on St Agnes is limited and highly sought after. Options include self-catering cottages, a small number of B&Bs, and Troytown Farm (a campsite and self-catering cottages at the southerly tip of the island with panoramic sea views). We list these neutrally — for the fullest, most current list, see the official Visit Isles of Scilly St Agnes listings.
